The distributor Mars Wrigley has confirmed that the fruit-flavoured chew Starburst brand has been withdrawn, which has left Australian candy enthusiasts in grief.
A prominent American multinational corporation Mars Wrigley makes chewing gum, chocolate mints, fruity candies, and mints.
The candy, formerly a staple of birthday celebrations and movie evenings, was gone from the shelves after early August when a TikTok lamenting its disappearance garnered over 1000 comments and 270,000 views.
Does It Involve A “Conspiracy Theory”?
Nariman Dein, a TikTok creator, described her inability to locate the Starburst lollipops as “a conspiracy theory.” In reaction to the media attention the video garnered, Mars-Wrigley issued a statement reiterating that the departure was real and not a hoax.
According to a company representative, “Our Starburst products are imported from Europe, and like many companies that are importing products from outside, the brand has been exposed to supply chain challenges and increased cost pressures over the previous two years.” “We’ve made the tough decision to withdraw the brand in Australia from June 2022. We’ve reviewed all options.” the statement reads.
According to a Mars-Wrigley spokeswoman, the brand’s demise was not a result of a quick viral marketing campaign but rather a long-term economic decision.
