As he urges the Australian-Chinese relationship to “get back on the right track,” China’s ambassador to Australia, Xiao Qian, has given a strong message to Australia to stop criticising Beijing’s military exercises near Taiwan. <\/p>\n

In his Wednesday speech to the National Press Club in Canberra, Mr. Xiao stated that the Australian government shift presented a chance for a “reset” of the bilateral relationship. <\/p>\n

His remarks came as tensions in Taiwan were rising following a visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi last week, when Australia joined the US, Japan, and other countries in denouncing Beijing’s military exercises in the area. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt gravely undermines peace and stability across the Strait… China and Australia, we\u2019re different in many aspects in history, in culture, in religion, in development stage and in political system.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur policy is for friendly cooperation with Australia. We\u2019re ready to work together\u201d to repair this relationship. <\/p>\n

He went on to say China accounted for about 34 per cent of Australia\u2019s total exports and imports in 2021, especially through the shipments of iron ore in WA. <\/p>\n
