This has happened before: in the 1970s, teachers from the United Kingdom, United States, and Canada were imported to Australia to fill a teacher shortage. Jason Clare, the minister of education, has requested Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil to expedite visas for people with teaching credentials. Sarah Mitchell, the minister of education for New South Wales, has even suggested that teachers receive citizenship more quickly.<\/p>\n

The indications from abroad, where COVID exacerbated already-existing shortages, are uninspiring. According to a recent survey conducted in England, bad compensation was mentioned as a major motivator for 70% of teachers to consider leaving their positions. According to a different poll, nearly 50% of principals or head teachers intended to step down following the COVID pandemic because to excessive workloads, low compensation, and challenges hiring new employees. The UK has already combined classes due to a lack of teachers, and it is currently seeking to hire foreign instructors, including those from Australia.<\/p>\n
