Overview
The International Student Accommodation Subsidy offers a one-time payment of $1,500 to help with housing costs for international students enrolled in full-time studies in Western Australia. The first 2,500 qualified overseas students will receive money from this fund in Semester 2, 2022.
What is accommodation subsidy?
To simply define it, accommodation subsidy is basically you getting help from the big guys i.e the government in this case, to aid you in paying your rent. Government-sponsored economic help such as subsidised housing aims to reduce housing costs and outgoings for those in need.

Accommodation subsidy for international students in Australia:
The International Student Accommodation Subsidy provides a one off payment of $1,500 to offset accommodation expenses while studying full-time in Western Australia. This fund will provide payments to the first 2,500 eligible international students in Semester 2, 2022.
This fund is paid out to successful eligible applicants once you have commenced your studies as at application date, and reached the census date for your institution. Additional eligibility criteria applies.
Important dates:
Applications open 9am (AWST) on Wednesday 14 September 2022 and close at 11am (AWST) on Wednesday 26 October 2022, or when program funds have been exhausted, whichever date is earliest.
Eligibility criteria:
To be eligible for the Accommodation Subsidy, an international student must:
1. Be an enrolled international student.
2. Have commenced studies onshore in Western Australia since 1 July 2022.
3. Be studying at a CRICOS-registered provider (Western Australian University, Vocational College or TAFE, pathway college, English Language (ELICOS) provider, or a primary or secondary school). (CRICOS – Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students) (ELICOS – English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students).
4. Be studying full-time in Semester 2, 2022, and the enrolled course must run for at least one year / two semesters.
5. Have commenced studies as at application date, and reached the census date of the institution.
6. Not have been in Western Australia studying at any time in 2021, and have entered Western Australia to commence or recommence their studies in person in Semester 2, 2022.
7. Not have studied in Western Australia at any time during Semester 1, 2022.
A Guardian can apply on behalf of international students enrolled in primary or secondary school and aged under 16 years. If approved, funds will be paid to the Guardian’s Australian bank account.
Application procedure:
1. Go to https://ie.smartygrants.com.au/S2-2022-ISAS
2. Click on the ‘Start a submission’ link.
3. Complete the application registration process. You will receive an email confirming your reference number (ISAS#).
4. Compete the online application form. You can save and return to the application form at any time before you submit the form.
5. Once your application is complete, click ‘Submit’.
6. You will receive an automated email acknowledging that your application has been received. Without this acknowledgement your application has not been submitted.
