Werribee is getting a new suburban rail loop, revolutionising how people move around. This new transport option’s introduction allows residents to travel quickly and conveniently between Werribee and other suburbs. This is great news for commuters, families, businesses, and everyone else who needs to get around town!
01. Highlights of Suburban Rail Loop
There is a rail loop around the Melbourne metropolitan area that is 90 kilometres long called the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL). Every major rail line, from the Frankston Line to the Werribee Line, will be linked to SRL. This means the SRL will convert Melbourne’s rail system from its existing radial configuration to an orbital one.
The Project includes a rail link to the airport and the construction of three “transport super hubs” at Clayton, Broadmeadows, and Sunshine to link commuters from outlying areas to the Suburban Rail Loop.
There Will Be Three Parts to The Loop
● SRL East
● SRL North
● SRL West

02. How Big is The SRL Project?
Construction of the Loop will be spread out over several decades due to its massive size. The SRL East and SRL North segments will be built initially. The Western Rail Plan, Melbourne Airport Rail, and the Melbourne Metro Tunnel will work together to plan and build the western segment.
Initial estimates place the total cost of the SRL East and SRL North segments between $30 and $50.5 billion. Unfortunately, neither a completion date nor an anticipated price tag for SRL West has been revealed as of yet.
SRL East is the initial section of the Suburban Rail Loop, and it consists of a tunnelled 26-kilometre metro corridor between the southern suburb of Cheltenham and the northern suburb of Box Hill. New stations will be built at Monash and Burwood, and the route will connect to the existing heavy rail stations. The new Clayton junction will serve as a “transportation super hub,” linking locals to the Suburban Rail Loop.
03. Why is This Project Considered A Game-Changing Project?
The Suburban Rail Loop connects cities and suburbs through more than just a railroad. Enhanced accessibility via the new rail line and better walking and cycling links will foster thriving communities in the larger precincts surrounding the new stations. Improvements to the regional rail system in Victoria are another project benefit.
04. Will This Project Create Digital Engagement?
As the importance of online community interaction grows in infrastructure projects, RPS has helped SRLA communicate through a specially crafted digital engagement area. The online forum was designed with convenience in mind, so participants can join discussions and provide comments whenever convenient. The area gave easy access to Suburban Rail Loop project details while providing SRLA with real-time insights into public opinion.
