Victoria recruiting overseas health workers

The govt is magnifying Victoria’s healthcare workforce by recruiting hundreds of doctors, nurses, midwives & health professionals living overseas to help ease pressure on the health system.

From countries like Ireland, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, India, New Zealand, the Philippines, and the United States, nearly 700 foreign healthcare workers have recently arrived in Victoria. Of these workers, one in five are now employed by Victoria’s public health services.

Since 2014, the public health system has added more than 22,000 additional healthcare employees, including 8,500 who started their careers during the pandemic. Since the opening of international borders, there has been an increase in foreign workers interested in experiencing Australian culture and furthering their careers in Victoria’s renowned public health system.

Recent government workforce measures include a $59 million package to increase the number of student nurses and student midwives as well as $3,000 subsidies to help keep employees working in public hospitals and ambulance services.

Today, Premier Daniel Andrews and Health Minister Mary-Anne Thomas paid a visit to the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre to meet with the intrepid medical professionals who are travelling from all over the world to work at the world-class facility.
