Premier Daniel Andrews said that Year 12 students considering a career in nursing or midwifery would have their HECS expenses paid.
He added:
“The pandemic is putting tremendous strain on every health system in the nation. Giving our dedicated employees more support on the ground is the finest thing we can do for them, which is why this package will train and hire more nurses than before.”
More than 17,000 nurses and midwives will be hired and trained as part of a significant hiring and upskilling push thanks to Victoria’s health system’s $270 million boost.
The Victorian government will also cover the cost of more than 10,000 students’ undergraduate nursing or midwifery programmes. Scholarships will also be provided for thousands more students who intend to pursue postgraduate degrees in high-demand fields, including intensive care, cancer treatment, pediatrics, and nurse practitioner specialties.

A grant of up to $16,500 will be given to all new domestic students who enrol in a professional-entry nursing or midwifery programme in 2023 or 2024 to help with course fees.
Students will receive $9,000 while studying and the remaining $7,500 if they work in Victorian public health services for two years
