Dev Patel is a hero on and offscreen: He helped stop a violent altercation involving a knife fight in Australia

Dev Patel is a hero on and offscreen

In Australia, the Slumdog Millionaire star dispersed a brawl that had descended to the point of stabbing. However, his team felt that the focus should be on the systemic oppression of marginalized people rather than him receiving acclaim for acting instinctively.

Patel’s staff stated to Variety that the actor and some of his friends intervened to break up a knife fight in South Australia, where he resides.

As per the country’s 7News, a man was stabbed in the chest during a street altercation that also occurred inside a convenience shop. He is expected to survive.

The representative for the Lion actor said, “We can confirm that the previous night in Adelaide, Dev Patel & his friends witnessed a violent altercation that was already taking place outside of a convenience store. Dev tried to defuse the situation and break up the altercation based on his instinct. Thankfully, they were successful, and they stayed at the scene to ensure that the police and eventually the ambulance showed up.”

The Patel team emphasized in their statement that “There are no heroes in this circumstance and that this particular occurrence exposes a wider systemic problem of marginalized segments of society not receiving the respect and dignity they deserve.”

The statement concluded by saying, “The hope is that the level of media attention this story is receiving (only because Dev, as a famous person, was involved) can be a catalyst for lawmakers to be compassionate in determining long-term solutions to help not only the individuals who were involved but the community at large.”

Since playing the lead in David Lowery’s fantasy film The Green Knight last year, Patel has been taking a break. Monkey Man, his Netflix-supported debut feature picture, has been shot and is currently in post-production. He will also act alongside Ralph Fiennes and Benedict Cumberbatch in Wes Anderson’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.
