Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi Capitals by seven wickets in a thrilling Women’s Premier League (WPL) championship match at the Brabourne Stadium. Mumbai overcame an early blip under the captaincy of India, Harmanpreet Kaur, to overtake Delhi’s modest 131/9 mark.
Mumbai was having trouble chasing at 23/2, but Harmanpreet (37 off 39 balls) and Nat Sciver-Brunt (60* off 55b) demonstrated their ability to handle pressure by putting on a match-winning 72-run third wicket partnership. They took their time to settle in and played lots of dot balls, but once they locked on, they started setting boundaries. At 95/2 after 16 overs, Harmanpreet was eventually run out, but Sciver-Brunt and Amelia Kerr (14* off 8b) finished the chase with three balls remaining.
Earlier, Delhi’s innings got off to a frenzied start during which they lost two wickets in the second over. The 20-year-old English bowler Issy Wong finished with scores of 3/42 after taking three wickets. Meg Lanning and Marizanne Kapp, Delhi’s most seasoned duo, stitched up a 38-run stand, but Mumbai quickly retook the lead by taking the next six wickets for just six runs. Matthews bowled a superb 3/5 overs, and Kerr contributed 2/18 consistently. Shikha Pandey and Radha Yadav, who put up an unbroken 52-run stand for the penultimate wicket, saved Delhi’s innings.
