Globally, public holidays are traditionally celebrated to honor a religious or historical event in a specific country. With 2023 mere weeks away from entering the foray and making changes in the annual public holiday calendar and other important dates. We’re writing this blog to go over the upcoming public holidays for Tasmania. Unlike the rest of Australia, Tasmania witnesses approximately 23 annual public holidays. With so many holidays, Tasmania could be called a public holiday lover’s home but for now, let’s take a look at when those holidays fall.

The aforementioned holidays are accurate during the time of publication; but there might be changes depending on Tasmania’s official changes.

 

Important Notes:

  • Holiday Act 1983 says that extra public holiday will be added if new year, Christmas day, or boxing day falls on weekend. New year’s day falls on Sunday, hence the following Monday is also added as an additional public holiday.
  • Devonport cup holiday isn’t fully public holiday but it’s a local public holiday, it is celebrated in most parts of Tasmania.
  • Royal Hobart Regatta is a three day event celebrated during the weekend, and followed by Monday which is a public holiday in almost all parts of Tasmania.
  • Easter Tuesday is just restricted to Tasmania.
