Stabbing of Shubham Garg Australia visa approved for family

The family of Shubham Garg, a 28 years old  Indian international student who was stabbed numerous times in Sydney, has been permitted to travel to Australia.

The University of New South Wales (UNSW), the Indian High Commission in Australia, the Australian High Commission in India, the Indian Consulate General in Sydney, and others collaborated to make sure Shubham’s family could visit Australia.

Shubham’s family received assistance from Seema Chauhan, a Gold Coast-based Registered Migration Agent, with their Australian Visa application. Rohit Garg, Shubham’s brother, has been permitted to travel to Australia to be with his brother.

Dr Yadu Singh, a prominent member of the Indian Australian community in Sydney, has also taken an active part in this process.

He had also pleaded with the Indian High Commissioner in Australia, Manpreet Vohra, and the Australian High Commissioner in India, Barry O’Farrell, to assist the family.

The attack on an Indian national in Australia has been reported to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, which released the following statement:

“The Indian national is in hospital; our High Commission & Consulate is in close contact with local authorities & family here. Our officials have met the student. We expect that actions will be taken against the offenders.”


Shubham has undergone numerous surgeries and is still being treated in the hospital. Although grave, his condition is stabilised. Once in Australia, Shubham’s family will want further assistance with accommodation, transportation, and adapting to the environment.

Around 10.30 p.m. on October 6th, Shubham Garg was returning to his home when he was stabbed many times at the intersection of Pacific Highway and Gatacre Avenue in Lane Cove.

After the incident, he sought aid from a neighbouring home, then was driven to Royal North Shore Hospital. Shubham underwent surgery, and he is critical but stable.
