In 2002, Dr Hema Shankar earned a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS) degree from Flinders University. Before completing her residency, in general practice in 2012, she spent many years working in acute settings and six years in the ICU at St. Andrews. She then spent the next four years at Adelaide Plastic Surgery Associates studying various dermatological procedures before completing additional training in the US focusing on patients with a darker complexion.
She has combined acute medicine and general practice while working as a locum all around Australia. She has experience working in hospitals, private practices, and urban, rural, and remote settings. Her expertise includes Indigenous Health, ophthalmology, dermatology, and the intensive care unit.
She is presently enrolled in a law degree at the University of Adelaide. She is a lifelong learner; she has a Master’s in English literature and has published research in ophthalmology. Dr Shankar is available in the mornings on Monday and Friday.
