In an exciting development, 12 school principals across Victoria are set to embark on a transformative educational journey in India. Their 10-day visit, scheduled for October and November, will encompass many experiences. The principals will not only immerse themselves in the Indian education system through placements in Indian schools but also participate in workshops alongside their Indian counterparts.

One of the program’s highlights is the principals’ participation in the DIDAC Conference in Bengaluru, Asia’s most prominent educational exhibition featuring representatives from over 34 countries. This conference promises to be a platform for exchanging innovative ideas and practices in education.

The Women in School Leadership program, initiated in 2019/20, is a vital component of Victoria’s India Strategy: Our Shared Future. Its primary goal is to promote intercultural understanding and strengthen ties with Melbourne’s growing Indian community. In a reciprocal gesture, a visit from 12 Indian school principals to Victoria is scheduled for May next year, reinforcing the commitment to cross-border educational collaboration.

Shashi Banerjee, Director of Education at India’s Shiv Nadar Schools, who participated in the inaugural program, attests to the profound impact it had on their institution. She notes that the mere presence of Victorian principals on campus significantly influenced the school’s culture for the better.
Eva McMaster, Principal of Doncaster Secondary College and a program participant during its pilot phase highlights how the initiative completely transformed her outlook on education. She describes it as an eye-opener that dispelled preconceived notions, emphasising the generosity, openness to learning, and the close relationships forged with partner principals.
In addition to the WISL program, Minister Ben Carroll has announced a ground-breaking initiative. Three schools in Melbourne are set to offer Hindi and Punjabi language programs from 2025, backed by an additional $3.5 million investment. This initiative aims to provide more Victorian students with the opportunity to study these languages up to the VCE level, promoting cross-cultural ties and connecting local students with India’s rich heritage.
