Australia’s COVID isolation period 5 days for those without symptoms

Overview

The Covid isolation time for individuals with no symptoms will now only last five days, as approved by the national cabinet. However, those who are still ill and those who work in high-risk environments like aged care will still be required to undergo a seven-day enforced isolation.

For those who show no symptoms, the Australian Covid isolation period is reduced to five days. Changes take effect on September 9 with Anthony Albanese announcing that persons in self-quarantine will continue to receive reduced pandemic leave payments.

On Wednesday, the acting chief medical officer, Prof. Michael Kidd, provided an update to the state and territory leaders, who then approved the adjustment, according to the announcement made by the prime minister, Anthony Albanese.

He described the strategy as “proportionate” given the evolving pandemic circumstances.

On Wednesday, the national cabinet also decided to end the requirement for mask use on domestic flights. The two policies will take effect on Friday, September 9. Albanese claimed that the national cabinet was “collegiate” and had reiterated the necessity for a consistently applied strategy across the board. Leaders will reassemble in a fortnight to discuss extending pandemic leave benefits over their scheduled expiration date of 30 September. The payments will be reduced, however, to about $535 from the $750 rate for seven-day isolation.

To safeguard those who were “especially vulnerable,” Kidd suggested that the reduction in isolation not apply to those who work in aged care, disability care, or in-home care settings. The decision was not being made due to health considerations, according to Prof. Nancy Baxter, director of the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health at the University of Melbourne.

According to the most recent federal health department data, 111,000 persons are presently thought to be Covid users. All around the nation, there are about 3,000 patients in hospitals. In light of the peak in Covid cases nationwide, the national cabinet had proposed shortening the isolation period at its meeting last month, but Prof. Paul Kelly, the chief medical officer, opposed this.
