According to social media behemoth Meta, WhatsApp users now have new privacy features. Users of the online messaging service will be able to choose who can view their online status, end group chats, and block screenshots on messages marked as View Once. According to Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, this will help maintain WhatsApp communications as private and safe as in-person discussions.

“WhatsApp is introducing new privacy features that will allow you to leave group chats secretly, manage who can see when you’re available, and stop screenshots from being taken of messages when they are first seen. We’ll continue to develop additional security measures to keep your messages as private and secure as in-person interactions,” added Zuckerberg.
The New “Leave Groups Silently” Feature
With WhatsApp’s “Leave Groups Silently” feature, members can leave a group secretly without telling anyone. Instead of the entire group, now just the admins will be alerted when a group member leaves. Starting in the UK this month, the feature will be made available to all users worldwide.
WhatsApp stated, “Users can feel more connected to one another by seeing when their friends and family are online, yet everyone has experienced times when they wanted to check their WhatsApp secretly. WhatsApp allows you to choose who can and cannot see when you’re online, which is useful for those occasions when you want to keep your online activity private.”
There Will No Longer Be Support For “View Once Messages” Screenshots.
The online chat service will no longer permit “View Once Messages screenshots.” It was claimed that sharing photographs or other media that don’t require a permanent digital record using “View Once” is a highly well-liked practice. “For an additional layer of security, WhatsApp is now allowing screenshot blocking for View Once messages. This function is being tested and will soon be available to users, “added WhatsApp.
The company went on to say that introducing these new features is supported by a recent WhatsApp privacy study, which discovered that while 72 percent of people value the ability to speak candidly and unfiltered, more than 47 percent only feel comfortable doing so in a safe, private setting.

Product head for the platform, Ami Vora, attributed it to its focus on developing product features that give users more control and privacy over their messages. Additionally, this will align the “last seen” with online status options settings by allowing users to make it so that only specific contacts – or no one – can view when they are active on the platform.
