Overview
There is an “unprecedented” teacher shortage in Australia. By 2025, the federal government anticipates a shortage of about 4,000 high school teachers. Increasing the number of foreign-trained teachers entering the country is one of the suggested remedies by lawmakers.
By 2025, the Australian federal government expects a shortage of approximately 4,000 high school teachers. Increasing the number of foreign-trained teachers entering the country is one of the suggested remedies by lawmakers. This has happened before: in the 1970s, teachers from the United Kingdom, United States, and Canada were imported to Australia to fill a teacher shortage. Jason Clare, the minister of education, has requested Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil to expedite visas for people with teaching credentials. Sarah Mitchell, the minister of education for New South Wales, has even suggested that teachers receive citizenship more quickly.
The indications from abroad, where COVID exacerbated already-existing shortages, are uninspiring. According to a recent survey conducted in England, bad compensation was mentioned as a major motivator for 70% of teachers to consider leaving their positions. According to a different poll, nearly 50% of principals or head teachers intended to step down following the COVID pandemic because to excessive workloads, low compensation, and challenges hiring new employees. The UK has already combined classes due to a lack of teachers, and it is currently seeking to hire foreign instructors, including those from Australia.
USA, New Mexico, Canada are following a similar trend and working with agencies to find qualified foreign teachers.
Although the low salary in the UK and some US states might make Australia sound appealing, it is unlikely that many teachers will be found there given the present teacher shortages in England, the US, and Canada. Although it’s feasible to find teachers in other nations like India, Malaysia, and Singapore, it’s unlikely that they’ll be in great numbers, in part because of the time-consuming registration processes and occasional discrimination when applying for jobs. The likelihood of increased international rivalry for a decreasing pool of qualified instructors worldwide is higher.
